  14. <p>    DIED. Prince Franz Josef II of Liechtenstein, 83, monarch
  15. of the 62-sq.-mi. principality for 51 years; in Grabs,
  16. Switzerland. The twelfth ruler of Liechtenstein and a nephew of
  17. Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination in 1914
  18. triggered World War I, he was the first Prince to take up
  19. permanent residence in the principality. He directed a
  20. modernization that transformed Liechtenstein from an
  21. underdeveloped rural community into one of Europe's richest
  22. enclaves. He is succeeded by his oldest son, Prince Hans Adam,
  23. 44.
